Left vs Right Brain : Understanding your Child

In my last article, we saw the basic differences between the mind and brain along with various learning styles that vary from individual to individual.

Further, to identify what combination is the best for your child, it is also necessary for parents to be aware of the information that surrounds left and right brain and its characteristics and not just different learning styles.

And why do I say so?

Well, the brain as we all know is divided into two hemispheres – the left brain and the right brain. The left brain controls muscles on the right side of the body while the right brain controls muscles of the left side of the body.

Left brainers are more sequential and very rational in the sense that they are more planned and perform activities in a very structured form. They control their feelings and prefer to talk, write and respond to verbal instructions. The individuals who belong to this group get comfortable only when they have information which is certain, established and organized. Left brainers are very logical as they are able to make quick distinctions and are able to define cause and effects effortlessly. They like closed ended question at most multiple choices questions. Left brainers are analytically oriented and therefore fair well in subjects like mathematics.

On the other hand, right brainers are intuitive and often have spontaneous nature. They are comfortable with the uncertain information and look for a pattern, configuration or similarities while problem-solving. Resemblance or connectedness to the subject matter is more important for them than to be very specific or be distinct like the left brainers. Right brainers have impulsive nature and able to express their feelings quite freely and are more creative, artistic and open minded. They also exhibit multi dimensional thinking and have a strong inclination towards art, music, drawings etc. They are more comfortable with open ended questions and are blessed with strong memory where they can quickly remember dates, events, places, names, and faces.

In most of the cases, children, when born, have both sides of the brain equally balanced. However, when it comes to learning, different children learn the same tasks differently based on dominance with the right or the left brain.

Many of us must have experienced in our parental journey at some time or the other when our child has shown a keen interest in doing art related project work or a science assignment given by the school. In some cases the result might be exactly opposite and the child is blatantly non-participative to the extent that the response is, “I don’t like this”, or “I don’t want to do it”, or “I can’t do it” and the parents get surprised, upset or even irritated.

Have you ever wondered why would they say like that?

There might be a scenario when parents receive complaints from the school teachers that the son or daughter is not attentive in the class. The concerns raised by the teacher then is that most of the time the student is not at all concentrating on the black board but is busy doodling away when the class is in progress. But actually, this may not be the case. On the contrary, the child may well be attentive and knows what is been taught. It is just that some dominant side of the brain is active during the class and the student prefers to learn his own way.

Imagine a case and I am sure many of the parents would agree with me. How many of us have experienced and witnessed when our kids get too obsessive for a very specific preference and choices for the clothes they wear, like wearing only matching clothes. Well, it’s not an obsession or a reflection of your child’s disobedience but rather it has something to do with the characteristics and functioning of the brain. It’s just that the dominant side of the brain is not allowing to smoothly blend with the other side.

Quite a revelation, Isn’t it?

Well, there are innumerable cases when the child gets obstinate and go on demanding the things their way and it is very difficult for the adults to lower the frustration levels and raise the patience threshold limits time and again in similar scenarios.

All of us want our kids to excel and succeed not just in studies but also at extracurricular activities. Don’t we?

Well, learning here plays an important role and therefore for the parents, it is necessary to be aware of how left or right side brain might actually influence how our children are acquiring the knowledge and skills.

But the question is, how do you identify the relative development of the right and left brain hemisphere of your child based on facts and not based on perceptions or observations?

Mind vs Brain – Made easy for Parents

Mind and Brain are often construed complex and interpreted differently.

Parents need not be Psychologist or behavioral experts to know their children inside out. But they should be aware of the basic differences between these two at an elementary level and view them hand to hand for the child’s overall growth.

The brain is one of the important organs that has a physical presence, unlike mind which cannot be seen. While brain, which is roughly around 350-400 grams when a child is born (adult brain weighs 1300-1400 grams), it contains millions of neurons, but there is no metric for the mind to be quantified as on date.

It must be interesting to note that the brain is not just the expert at thinking but it also carries some important functions such as planning, strategizing, analysis and management. It is further divided into LHS and RHS brain. On the other hand, mind represents spontaneous emotions, which is nothing but flow and experience of feelings.

So when a child is born, the mind doesn’t have the inbuilt differentiating capability, it is the brain in the child that upheld the distinction between good-bad, sin-virtue etc.

What we show to kids, what we make them hear and what we make them feel gets imprinted, sometimes permanently, in the mind. It is the brain that decides what gets registered in mind as for right and wrong.

Unfortunately, in many cases, some early teachings by people around are so deeply ingrained during child’s initial growth stages that it is hard to change the perceptions at a later stage even at adulthood.

So, it is very important for we as parents to be very conscious about what, when, where, why, and how we speak with our kids. Because the child listens, sees, feels and displays pure reflection of what has been fed to him in the given surroundings and circumstances.

The natural principle holds true in this case as well– What you sow is what you reap.

It will be worth to refresh that the mind gets its information feed from five primary sources and these are our sense organs, eyes, ear, skin, nose, and tongue

The visual or spatial style refers to the preference of learning based on images, pictures, colors, etc that help the child communicating with other by mapping and organizing data.

In the case of auditory learning style, the child depends heavily on hearing and speaking as a main way of learning.

Kinesthetic or tactile learning style is where a child learns by participating in physical activities (practicals) rather than listening to lectures watching demonstrations.

Olfactory learning style refers using the sense of smell while gustatory refers to the sense of taste to enhance learning and retention.

If we were to talk about the utility of the brain, it is a very useful human organ that is used as a tool to analyze, identify needs, imagine and memorize.The brain has the power to decide whether or not it wants to live in the emotions that flow from the mind. But it also crushes all those emotions which it thinks are not of immediate benefit to the individual.

There exists a need to balance the brain and fine-tune it with the mind to make the life happy and successful for your child.

Children, inherently learn new things by perceiving information and experience by adapting mostly Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic learning styles in almost all majorities of the cases.

Parenting: Your way …My way … Which way? – Part 2

In this concluding post on parenting, I have tried to highlight the importance of why parents need to be aware of their child’s unique needs and demands as they grow both physically and mentally.

Irrespective of race, creed, caste and religion, the children across the globe primarily understand only two languages – Love and Anger, which are the only form of energies, any child is born with.

When a child is fascinated by playing with an object that excites him, he is fully engrossed. But the moment you take this object away from him, the child gets irritated and tries to snatch it back. In turn, the child gets annoyed and sometimes hostile. That’s the expression of anger.

On the other hand, if we provide some more options of fascinations to play around, the child’s reactions vary. The child exhibit abundance joy and exuberance with what they like to play and gets fully occupied in their own world while ignoring the rest. That’s the expression of love.

As the child starts growing up, people around him start imparting various kinds of information and teachings to the child that may include how to behave, what are good manners and what is right, what is wrong etc.

We as parents also thrust upon our own beliefs and understandings to children based on our past experiences. In fact, even push the thought of becoming someone in life setting him our goals and targets that we often failed to achieve.

“Don’t get angry”, “Stop crying”, “Respect elders”, “Don’t do this, else…”, “Don’t do that, otherwise……”, etc are most common sentence we as adults pronounce to them on daily basis.

Now, imagine a child, who is spontaneous to his reactions with his pure mind is gradually getting corrupted with many things that are propelled with biased ideas which may not often be universally true and even worthwhile.

Result – a differentiation is created in the mind of the child such as what is good and what is bad or what is correct and what is not. The child is obligated to adhere to the teachings imparted to him with some fear and insecurity instilled all the time.

The matter doesn’t end here.

The child who desired love all the time and wanted to play endlessly is now forced to attend school in the name of discipline with burdened mind with the goal of accomplishing something great in life.

When the child attends the school, he is devoid of his freedom and his fun loving activities which otherwise kept engrossed at home. The child is confused and feels miserable because he does not get any love from the teachers at school, unlike his mother at home. Emotions such as disappointment, pity, sympathy crept in and the child becomes more sentimental and emotional.

It is this suppression of love that begets the most grievous results quite early in some kids.

Also, on several occasions, the child’s anger too keeps getting suppressed.

The child likes to play and indulge in mischief but he does not get an opportunity to do so. The child who initially lived in complete freedom is compelled to have a restrained life not just at school but even at home. The result, he gets angry but is not allowed to express. This suppressed anger gradually gets converted into emotions such as anxiety, distress, fear, jealousy etc.

There are even more challenges when the child is growing, especially in pre-teens and teens where such suppressed emotions get released in various behavioral forms often not liked by parents. The result, an ongoing tussle between the child and parents.

The question is, how to deal with the child in their growth stages?

Well, the answer lies in understanding the child and getting aware of different aspects of parenting.

Parenting : Your way …My way … Which way ?

It was last year around August 2016, when my son Shriyans then in class IV had a social science formative assessment test at his school and I happened to go through his syllabus for the first time. I am referring to the XSEED Social Science Grade 04 Content Book and the very first lesson was on “Changes in Family’.

The lesson talks about a girl named Nina who goes to spend her summer holidays with her grandparents and learns about changes in the families over a period of time. The main sections were and ‘Changes in a Family after the Birth of a Child’, ‘Change in the roles of Men and Women in a Family over time’, ‘Changes in a Family after a Wedding’, and “Caring for the Differently-Abled”.

My attention was grabbed by first two sections.

Why?, simply because it touched upon how a birth of a child brings about a change in a family especially where the responsibility of the adults in the house increases. The daily routine of the family changes to take care of the needs of the baby and it is where the family members become an important part supporting each other.

But not every time there exists such kind of family support and it is where Parenting plays an important role. Father and mother both, equally responsible to bring in the desired transformation during all the growth stages of the child.

I am sure everyone would agree that bringing a child into this world is the easiest job and that it is an ability which comes naturally to every one of us and quite effortlessly without being taught.

But the question is “Is it so easy and natural for each one of us to raise a child supporting their physical, emotional, social and intellectual development, especially from infancy to adulthood?

I found the answer is not that easy.

When I dwelled upon and ask many of my friends who are parents to kids under age 10, some having their kids in pre teens and some even has teens. I asked them for the plausible answers and there were many mixed responses. I later categorize them as, “My Way”, “Your Way”, “Others Way”, and the “Right Way”.


Well, Parenting is all about knowing and promoting the “Right Way” that eventually prepares a child for being a self-reliant and independent individual.

During my post graduation days and even during the corporate life I had often heard of this cliché, one should have “Out of the box thinking”. And I always used to wonder what box is being referred to?, Does this box really exist? Even if it really exists then can anyone teach “How to think Out of THAT Box”? because, unlike 2 + 2 = 4, out of the box thinking was never taught during my school life and later there was no separate elective offered.

Well, the smart management gurus and learned individuals from corporate use this cliché as a metaphor for ‘creative thinking’.

But not all are creative thinkers. Are we?

That’s because “Creative Thinking’ was never a part of the syllabus or course curriculum.

Similarly, Parenting is never taught at school, at college, not even in the family or by relatives, forget about the corporate.

To know what the “Right Way” of parenting is, we as parents need to learn and understand some basics of human psychology when a child is born.

You may ask why psychology? Aren’t we grown and experienced enough to know what is good especially after being parents to a couple of kids now?

The answer lies in a reality that we usually ignore or simply because many of us are unaware of. And the reality is that as we have grown and become adults, and in the process carried certain filters and lenses that have defined our outlook and perspective towards life in general and also towards other individuals.

These filters and lenses have ensued in constricted approach and limited outlook because there are innumerable filters to apply and equally countless lenses to see through primarily because of the different culture, religion, education, economic background, value systems and partially our own upbringings. There are endless permutations and combinations of these parameters that are typical to each individual just like the unique finger prints.

Think for a moment what would happen and how would you feel if such filters and lenses simply get removed and don’t exist for each one of us.

Imagine it is now. And while you are reading the remaining article, you are with a clear and clean slate with no previous impressions of parenting.

With this state attained, my question to you now is, if you happen to learn something new about parenting, wouldn’t you be treating your children little different if you know a better way to do it?

I am sure the answer would be “Yes” from most of you unless one is not open to unlearn and learn, the concept would not seep in.

Everyone would agree that childhood has been the turning point for each one of us and it is no different for children. It may be worthwhile to note that by the age of 4 – 5 years, the children have grasped all that is worth learning for life. Rest is then consolidation through failed experimentations and sometimes aimless explorations.

And it is this period of growing years; parents need to be extra cautious about the getting the foundation right and later curing it with love for the rest of the life.

The crux of parenting is all about understanding your child and in the process making him an ACE.

A – Ability (It can be ‘Accrued’ over period time OR is ‘Inherent’)

C – Concentration and Confidence (It can be built around)

E – Energy and Enthusiasm (It varies from Person to Person)

But in doing so, it is important to understand the mind of children and guide them the ways and means of this world through the different growth stage that eventually defines and conditions their life.

So, where do we start from?

Well, the simple answer to this question is that all the parents need to follow a simple principle defined and dictated by nature. The same fundamental truth, a universal proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief for a chain of reasoning

I am no expert but yes, I was able to course correct myself on parenting after I understood this basic principle that relates to a child’s mind. I am now much more positive in building a strong relationship with my son in the time to come.
